Teenager Dawson Devoy provided two quality assists as Bohemians had far too much for First Division Cabinteely at Dalymount Park to comfortably book their passage through to the last eight of the Extra.ie FAI Cup.
With nine changes from their penalty shootout defeat in the Europa League to Fehérvár in Budapest last Thursday, Bohemians manager Keith Long showed the depth to his squad against his father-in-law managed promotion hopefuls as they racked up a sixth successive domestic win.
Pat Devlin’s visitors were troubled from the off, Promise Omochere bringing a comfortable save from Corey Chambers before Dinny Corcoran should really have put the home side in front on eight minutes.
JJ Lunney’s sublime diagonal ball picked out the run of the big striker. And though onside and with plenty of time, Corcoran’s feeble flicked effort was easily dealt with by Chambers.
Cabinteely worked hard in admirably trying to play their way into the game with Keith Dalton cutting in from the right to curl a shot wide on 18 minutes.
But the bulk of the defending was having to be done at the other end and none more so than on 23 minutes when Bohemians carved the visitors open.
Lunney again was the architect, sliding a delightful pass down the inside-right channel for the run of Corcoran. And though he slipped the ball past advancing keeper Chambers, Lloyd Buckley raced back to clear off the line.
Moments later Chambers got down well to save a Corcoran drive from the edge of the area before tipping over a diving header from home skipper Michael Barker as the pressure on his goal mounted.
And it finally told on 32 minutes when Bohemians deservedly took the lead.
Central defender James Finnerty’s long ball down the right found Devoy. The composed 18-year-old schemer cleverly cut back onto his left foot to cross for Omochere to score with a neat finish when sweeping the ball past Chambers.
But the home side were caught napping three minutes later when Cabinteely came close to levelling.
Midfielder Alex Aspil worked a neat one-two with Marty Waters to get in behind the Bohs defence and bring a parry save from James Talbot.
It mattered not, as Bohemians doubled their lead five minutes before the interval.
Again the impressive Devoy was the instigator with the assist, curling over a cross with his left foot for Corcoran who arrived to toe the ball past Chambers.
Chances were fewer in a less frenetic second half, though Omochere ought to have scored again, once more set up by Devoy, only to blaze his drive over the top just before the hour mark.
