A disappointing start for Cabo as they went down to Bray in their first outing of the U19 EA Sports National Underage League Shield Group A.
A goal in each period gave Wanderers all three points on Sunday afternoon at the Carlisle Grounds.
The visitors had won the league fixture between the teams at the same venue by a 2-1 score-line last July. But both teams fielded much-changed line-ups since then.
The visitors went close on three minutes when Oran Molony lobbed over.
At the other end, Darragh Kenny saved two close-range headers Ibrahim Camara (9) and Sam Hayden (11).
The Wicklow side were awarded an 18th-minute penalty when Eoin Green was fouled in the box. But he appeared to be offside in the build-up. Jamie Callaghan converted the spot-kick.
Cabo’s Lee McEvoy twice fired over (30 and 34) when cutting in from the left flank for the visitors.
Molony fired over from inside the box three minutes after the turnaround. Destiny Idele slotted wide when well placed in the 52nd minute. Seconds later at the other end, Kenny produced a wonderful save to deny Green.
Somehow it stayed 1-0 in the 61st minute. Molony challenged Bray custodian Cian Connors with Ryan Bowden blocking on the goal-line. The Seagulls counter attacked. Josh McGlone tried to shoot past Kenny. The net-minder parried and recovered to stop the ball before the line.
Cabo were then unlucky as defender Darragh Scanlon clipped the bar in the 63rd minute after being set up by McEvoy.
Wanderers’ sub Daniel O’Boyle fired across the face of goal on 70 minutes before Kenny pulled off a quite brilliant double save to deny McGlone on 81.
Bray sealed the win in style in the 86th minute. Regan Lennon span away from two opponents in central midfield. He then burst forward to unleash a cracking 25-yard shot to the top left-hand corner of the net.
